What  Barnardos do

'Barnardo’s transforms the lives of vulnerable children across the UK through the work of our projects, our campaigning and our research expertise.
We believe we can bring out the best in every child whether the issue is child poverty, sexual exploitation, disability or domestic violence.'

Although this video is not how we stylistically would present our final film, the way in which they retrace the catalyst which causes destruction is very intriguing. You do not find out until he tells his story why he is the way he is, which allows the audience to feel sympathy towards the character. The sound initially is ambient as it allows the reader to fully listen in to what the character is saying and promotes realism with the hand held camera. However as the story becomes more serious and sad, there is a non-diagetic sound of a piano which casts a saddening tone, which is in stark contrast to the anger the character is portraying. This could reflect the inner emotions of the character, and how his experiences has altered the way he acts around others. This music allows the audience to understand why he acts the way he does and makes us less judgmental on the character in hand. Within this campaign and our own, there are similarities between the two. I believe that although they present their idea in a different form, our own product and this campaign uses a non stereotypical character and go to the root of the problem so that the audience can feel sympathy for them.

Analysis of poster and components to consider

We asked the public which poster they preferred.

It seems that so far we have had the most attention from Compression and Cupids Chokehold.

Instagram

By using the photo uploading site Instagram, it allows us to get feedback from our posters in another way. Users can comment and like the photos which have been uploaded, and hopefully, this will give us an insight into what the public's opinion on our posters is, and how we can improve and adapt to the feedback given.

Twitter

By asking the public what thoughts and emotions these images provoke, we can gather an idea on what the poster first represents to the media, as well as allowing us to see if we are communicating our message in the right way. By not initially stating what the poster is about, it allows the audience to think for themselves, and allows us to see if the compositions and tones are strong enough to convey our message to some extent without labelling it.

These are our samples for for our own poster

We have experimented with what we would like our audience to see when expressing our topic through a poster. Personally out of all three poster, i like the image where Eve and Bella merge together, as it gives the sense that they are bonded not only in their family ties, but with the relationship that they have. However, i prefer the texts from Cupids chokehold and silenced. As well as showing the relationship between the characters, having the child within Eve's face also symbolises that although she is tainted, she is still innocent like a child.

I like the font of and position of cupids chokehold, as it crosses the two sides of the poster. We have done this, as it mirrors the look of a lock, as it merges the two images together, suggesting that the character is entrapped in her own emotions due to the unseen character, who is reflected in the title. The title being a metaphor for her abuser. The black and white, and colour image, also suggests the past and the present and the title changing colour with it suggests that the problem is still current.

Main Colour Theme: Black Red saturated Yellow and Black and White.
We took the inspiration from this poster from the 'red balloon' where they compose the vibrant red against a less vibrant background. However, to make the ballon stand out more, and to compliment the overall colour theme within our poster, we wanted to place it on a black background and have the title going across the bottom. By having the title cut out of the picture, you can see the colours of the poster within the title, which highlights how 'silenced' rules over everything on the page. The red ballon and the red lipstick also create a link and the dark make up reflects the dark background. Like all the other posters i have analysed, i wanted to make the font bold, however, use the 'red ballon' approach of not having the title in bold, so that it does not detract our attention away from the image itself. Having our main protagonists face facing the front, whilst the child's faces the side, also insinuates how much footage there is to be shown of each character and object, focusing the main attention on our protagonist (Eve). Her dark eyes and lips are the centre of attention, and like 'Black Swan' have something unusual on her facial appearance to make the audience look twice. With our poster, it is the heavily applied make-up, which suggests her inner emotions.

Main Colour Theme : Black Red saturated Yellow and white
The colour again are dark to present the darker side of the protagonist as well as suggesting the horrific situation that the characters are in. Having our protagonist in a darker colour and the child in an opaque light colour, implies how the mother has been tainted, but the child will soon be engrossed into the vicious circle. This is further explored by the child's eyes having a shadow on the edge which reflects the dark make up the mother is wearing. This composition as implies that the child represents the innocence of the tainted character, and is the only thing that keeps her going. The colour of the hair and the colour of the child is the same, to suggest unity.

Main Colour Theme: Black Red saturated Yellow and White
Advertising agency

Grey London- Grey London is a charity for domestically abused woman, who produced the advertising campaign for domestic abuse featuring Keira Knightly which i have analysed further down in my blog. Their aim is to produce hard hitting campaigns that shock the public about the realism of society. However, it was only allowed to be shown after the water shed as it contains mature themes.

The commercial, made by ad agency Grey London, pans out to show that the scene is in fact occurring on a film set – but with no one else around. The ad ends with Knightley screaming and the strapline: "Isn't it time someone called cut?". This campaign also included poster adds.

In 2007, the agency created a shocking and much-publicised press and poster campaign for Women's Aid featuring celebrities including Jemma Kidd, Fiona Bruce and Anna Friel made-up to look as if their faces were covered in bruises from domestic violence.

The fact that most of these posters are against a white background makes the audience focus on the subject in hand, and draws the attention to the darker parts of the poster which is the bruises and cuts.

I like the third poster the most as it uses a make-up brand to reinforce the seriousness of the topic further. The mimic of the campaign with the half of the face, yet dark eyes focuses the attention around the eye area, due to the rest f the photo being normal and light in colour.

Screen shots

In 2012 the BBC produced a 5 episode drama, and this is a screenshot from one of the last episodes, i have chosen this as i like the way two images merge together, one being increasingly faded whilst the other image behind is slightly more solid. I believe we could use this approach when it comes to creating our poster.

This is another screenshot of an image that i have taken from an artist called Tyler Shields. I chose this shot as i like how this artist has used very high contrast, yet used two single spotlights to highlight the specific elements of this photo. The controlled lighting is something i would like to use within my own poster to reflect our groups film.

These are posters which i am going to analyse

My initial reaction to this poster is that it makes me feel uneasy as you are forced to look strait into the protagonists eyes and due to the colours having a big contrast, makes it an unsettling poser to look at, but interesting and different at the same time.

I like the way they are portraying a beautiful character, but use the crack down the side of her face to connote a possible hidden side. This crack also resembles crack on a china doll which could suggests that she is wearing a facade and underneath is broken.

Her pale face against the dark background makes the contrast in colour bigger, making the main character more noticeable. Having the character in the centre yet half her face slightly shadowed where the crack is could present that this character has a duel personality. The fact that they have chosen to shoot her face in a mid close up, makes the audience focus more attention on the subject in hand and also allows more attention to be drawn on the focus of the crack. However, there is a bright spot of white, but is unclear as to what it is, which allows us to have a hint about what the narrative contains but does not give away too much.

The title is at the bottom, which allows the image to speak for itself. It allows us as an audience not to draw assumptions from the title, but allows us to make our own decisions on what we see before us. However, the title colour reflects the name of the title which i like. Furthermore, having the title on the character suggests that the title reflects in some way the character herself and not the concept of the film.

The Colour Themes used are Black White Grey Brown and Pink

Association with colour

Black has the connotations of Death Sadness and Confusion isolation
White has the connotations of heaven purity religion and goodness
Grey has the connotations of conformity, repetition
Brown has the connotations of warmth, dirt,
Pink has the connotations of Love Friendship Companionship Affection

My initial reaction to this poster, is that it is going to be a romantic film set on a boat, however the splashing waves suggest that it is going to be filled with excitement as well as trouble. The overall colours are natural and the over all tone seems calming.

The composition of this poster is interesting, however, like  the BLACK SWAN this title is also over the object which is the films main focus. The colours within this poster is light, yet towards the bottom there is a shadow of darkness which could present a darker tone upon the lighter colours. The choice of position of the characters also makes an audience suspect why these two main characters are in the sky, almost ghostlike, which could foreshadow later events within the film.

The title is also bold and in capitals like BLACK SWAN which makes the title stand out as well as becoming more visually appealing.

The main focus on the page is the boat, and takes up most of the space. I like this approach to draw attention to something without using bold colours to grab an audiences attention.

The colour themes used are blues, whites, saturated golds and bronzes. However, again, the main focus of attention is in a different colour, whilst the rest of the background blends into each other to again draw focus on a specific point. The characters are opaque whilst the boat is a strong colour, also highlighting the boats importance, and the position of the boat, as we look up too it could be glorifying it to some extent.

Association with colour

Blue has the connotations of water, cold, death sorrow
White has the connotations of purity, heaven, freedom, religion
golds have the connotation of wealth, good quality and luxury
bronze has the connotation of warmth

My initial reaction to this poster, is that i find the brightness of the red unsettling, in contrast the dull background, however, i also feel that the balloon is an optimistic object and could be seen as a metaphor for hope, in the dull environment, as balloons have connotations of freedom.

Within this poster, the red ballon instantly catches my attention, and even though it is not in the centre, i like the was they use bright colours against an out of focused, saturated background to draw more attention to it. The boy, even though he is not out of focus, is darkened to draw attention away from the character and onto the balloon and has done this further by again placing the title on the object of interest. Even though the font is not bold, the colour of the title reflects the background and the over all colour theme and is in capitals when focusing on specific elements of the title. By not having 'the' in capital letters, at the front of the title, takes away the importance of the word, and therefore we as an audience dismisses it in our conscious state of mind and merely use it to make grammatical sense. Again the poster does not give too much away about the film as the background is out of focus.

The colour themes used are saturated yellows, blacks, greys and a deep red. The object of interest is in a different colour and is the only object in a different colour to grasp our attention as well as being significantly bigger than any other image on the page.

Association with colour

red has connotations do danger, love, passion.

grey has connotations of monotony repetition conformity order
saturated yellow has connotations of lack of freedom and unhealthy.
