group decision

We have decided that our former location was too normal and we wanted to go for a more artistic aproach such as in the Keira Knightley campaign. We opted for a location that allowed us to play around more with lighting and costume, making it more visually appealing for the audience. We still wanted to stick to the theme of domestic abuse but to pitch it to a more visually expressive audience, through symbolism, that would use colour and pictorial editing to capture the emotions of each character.

This footage was also shot in the Drama studio and was a taster for lighting styles.

New set idea

The set is going to be surreal with objects dropping down that symbolise pressure. We are going to still use some of the same objects and brought back the idea of having balloons. We have done this because we have changed the initial idea of a balloon popping, to using the balloons to signify the two different characters. For example, there is going to be loads of red balloons falling and then one single white balloon falling which symbolises how the dominant character is the male abuser, and how the female victim is shadowed by this. The pictorial editing used will show this concept further.

New costume

The man is going to be dressed simply in a back suit with a red hanker-chief to symbolise his dark side and the red to symbolise his rage and dangerous side, the small red hanker-chief is a simplistic was of promoting this. These colours should symbolise abuse more than an abusive person. We have dramatically changed his costume as the other costume did not seem as strategic.

The woman, like before is going to show purity, however, we are going to subvert the stereotype of an innocent character by having the character wear piercing, due to them signifying something that the public would associate with being rough and hardened. In contrast the abuser will not be wearing piercings to connect a secondary idea that anyone in any shape or form can be the abuser and the victim. The woman's costume and make up is going to be extravagant and floaty in style, she is still going to be wearing white, but she is going to have red nails and lipstick to represent how she has been tainted. This also symbolises an element of pain inside this strong looking woman.

The young child is still going to be dressed in a white dress to match the mother, but will not have any red items on her due to herself not being tainted and fully involved.
The lighting will be a more prominent feature as we wanted this piece to be even more symbolic than the previous idea and we wanted it to be an avant-garde piece of work.

The colour of red and what it represents

After Eve tweeted some of her friends and followers asking what the colour red represented to them the general reaction was love and death, lust and pain/danger which we thought was interesting as they don't know the significance of the colour red within our film. This feedback fits perfectly with what were trying to portray.

Firstly, i was really fond of the editing, and how they used contrasting pace between fast and slow. Having this really focuses on the chaos of the situation, and highlights how chaotic the situation is. The slow pace on the particular characters face or action, makes us as an audience pay more attention to what is in the shot rather than having it all at the same pace, as well as provoking an emotion from the audience. More over this slow pace, becomes more visually pleasing for the audience, and heightens the emotion because it is greatly contrasted with the fast pace. Within our film, we have already started to play with the pace on particular shots that we would like the audience to pay close attention to.

Other aspects such as the sound was also pleasing, and was in a very similar style to what we would like to do within our film, i like how the shots link well to the music that is playing to reflect the tone and the emotions. However, within our product, we will only be having non- diagetic sound without the voice of anyone singing as we would like our audience to gather what is going on through the strong visuals and music without the tone of someones voice and specific words that they would sing to help.

Mis- en -scene

The mis -en-scene within this advert is controlled, just as ours is, and by having this, allows the directors of this advert to play around more with the footage and objects, making it Avant-garde.

We as a group noticed that there were similarities between this advert and our product when it came to the colour scheme. Their constant repetition of red black and white, as well as the glamour and disaster merging together. However, instead of our narrative being linear, we have flash backs so that it tells our story in a different way.

Cinematography

Another aspect of the advert which i like, is the beginning close up shot, and how it focuses on a particular object, then it goes into a tracking shot and pans upwards, which is a technique that i would like to place somewhere within our film. I like the fact that all the way though it draws the audience into the scene with its close intimate shots such as close up shots and mid shots of the character to make us sympathise with the characters, however the last shot is a reflection of the first tracking shot and then distances the audience away from the scene, making them want more, and leaving feeling empty, as well as reminding the audience that they are watching an advert, which in a way makes us as an audience feel thankful for what situations we don't have to face. I also like the depth of field used within this advert, as it allows the shot to be filled, but allows the audience to focus on a specific thing within the compact shot. Furthermore, i like the the dream - like, confused effect this advert has, presenting realistic situations and emotions in a surreal way which is what we would like to replicate within our film.

I like the close attention to detail, especially the close up shot at 0.12 when you see the ring on the mans finger, but the woman is wearing a glove, which could suggest promiscuity, making the audience think in to detail why they have chosen that particular shot. It provokes certain questions such as ... are they married? is that her husbands or someone else's? which is something i would like to do within our film, having little symbols and shots to make the audience think about the relationships between characters.

Although this is a video, it presents problems within a relationship. It's violent conduct within the film is striking and makes it harder to watch due to the cross cutting between the actors and the artists who portray the characters emotions and thoughts, which is what i would like to happen within our film. The fire within the video connotes danger, either that the protagonist is in, or the danger within her actions. The juxtaposed shots between the female singer and the male singer holds the male singer in the wrong and distances the audience away from him. The fact that the female singer is in the fire, and the male singer is in the open, suggests that the female is trapped, emotionally and physically, whilst the male singer is open and free, suggested by the natural shots, which infers that the male in the video does not see what he is doing is wrong and does what comes natural to him which is complimented by the mis-en-scene around the male singer. This is much what i would like to show within our film, i would like to present the male characters thoughts and feelings within the film, but in a style that does not allow the audience to connect with him. I would like to show the antagonists building anger, and irrational thinking process. Furthermore, the narative appeals to me due to us as an audience seeing good times between the couple as well as the bad, which makes it more disturbing to watch. The intimate moments between the couple makes the problem bigger to walk away from, and within our film i would like to create a situation or problem that will make it harder for the audience to watch, and believe by our characters having a child is the perfect way to provoke emotions within our audience.

The natural light within the video suggests that these situations really happen and is something the audience can resonate with. This natural light casts a shadow which presents the realism further 0.45. At 1.35 the light is behind the antagonist, which casts a shadow over his face, insinuating that he is in the wrong and is the problem,by the audience not seeing his face, it distances himself from them so we cannot have a connection between him. The slow pace tracking shot towards the character makes the scene more intense, and allows the audience to understand that this is an intense moment.

At 3.15 there is a close up shot of the protagonists face, and it  changes from a happy smile to a serious stare, presenting that he is unstable, and it is shots like these that i am keep to use to give a hint that the protagonist is blinded by his own anger and rage.

The natural light and the fire, are reoccurring objects that have been specifically used throughout, which is what we would like to do with the concept of the balloon.
